Southend Raft Race

The Rotary Club of Thorpe Bay regrets that the 2018 Raft Race had to be cancelled on the day due to severe adverse weather conditions.  The risk to life and property was too much to allow the event to be held.

We understand the disappointment that this will have caused to raft crews and spectators but hope that you will be back with us next year on a day when the weather will hopefully be perfect for the event.

Such a shame it had to be cancelled, but big thanks to our sponsors and advertisers.

Sunday 29th July 2018
That is the date, starting at 10:00 on Thorpe Esplanade, Southend-on-Sea SS1 3BG.

Up to 50 sponsored rafts will race along the coast towards Southend and will raise funds for the local RNLI station and other charities. There will be prizes for the fastest raft; the most attractive raft; the best dressed all male crew; the best dressed all female crew, and other classes that we think of!

Rafts may have up to eight crew members, all of whom must be over the age of 18. The cost of each raft entry is £200 so, with up to eight crew, that’s just £25 per member. Crews may elect on entry to raise funds for either the local RNLI station or their own favourite registered charity.

To enter you must have read and agreed to the Rules and Regulations shown on the Raft Race Application page. The crew captain will then receive by post details of where and when to attend, a copy of the Rules and Regulations that he/she has agreed and these must be shared with the other members of the crew. On the day, every crew member will have to sign to confirm their acceptance of the Rules and Regulations.

Enjoy refreshments and entertainment on the green opposite the beach where toilet facilities will also be available. There will be a dedicated viewing area from where disabled persons can watch the races and parking for spectators. We give our sincere thanks to all members of Thorpe Bay Yacht Club who have made it possible to return this event to the Southend-on-Sea list of attractions.

So let’s make this another fun event and once again raise loads of money for charity.
